Annual ASA Meeting 2016 in Durham

EU Border Care went to the ASA 2016 annual meeting in Durham! On Monday, July 4, our research associate Cynthia Malakasis presented some of her doctoral findings in a presentation entitled “Greece, Europe, and the Others: Negotiating Mobility in Europe’s Borderlands.”  Cynthia engaged the concept of mobility and its positioning along the normal-aberrant, harmful -beneficial, and rightful-criminal conceptual spectra using data from the 2009-’10 public debate on Greece’s first-ever jus soli legislative initiative. Cynthia’s study, in the context of her Ph.D., of how Greeks along different social and ideological continua conceptualize and wish to regulate cross-border mobility has laid part of the ground for her upcoming ethnographic research in Greece for EU Border Care.
